First I layout a storyboard. Usually it's full of very rough doodles to get the idea of what will be on each page.

Then I move on to large thumbnails, I like 4x4 inch squares or 3x5 inch rectangles depending on the layout of the final work.

I then take those thumbs and create the final sketch in actual size. I like working 1:1 ratio on most projects. These pages are 8x8 inches.
I'll post the next stages as soon as I get them inked and colored.
If you'd like to share your process send me a link, I'd love to see others art in motion!

I love that you've shared so much of your process here. Some illustrators say that a project always starts with a character first. I was wondering if you already had the character worked out before you began the book project? or if the characters came alive once you had the settings in place?
Hi Edrian, Thanks for your comment.
To answer your question, I already had an idea about the characters, they are based on my 2 cute little wiener dogs. I normally come up with the story first, then decide who will be playing the parts when I start to doodle. So I guess the story is where I start my journey...thanks for asking I had not really thought about it before! You've opened my eyes...hehe
Hi Beck - I did a walkthru of one of my illos - not for the book i'm doing right now tho. Heres the link:
